We welcome everyone to watch the recordings of the lightning talks from the Nextcloud Community Conference 2026! About this lightning talk: Speaker: Iva Horn Title: From browser tab to first-class citizen Description provided by the author: There are already two ways to get Nextcloud out of the browser on a Mac, and each costs you something. The official desktop client makes Files a first-class citizen through a native File Provider extension. CalDAV, CardDAV and IMAP carry calendars, contacts and mail into Apple's own apps, and from there into Notification Center, Spotlight and Siri — but open standards are a lowest common denominator by design. You get the data, not the Nextcloud experience. Everything that makes Nextcloud Nextcloud — Talk, Deck, Notes, the sharing and activity workflows — is still a browser tab.Cirruscope, an unofficial spare-time project, wraps the web interface Nextcloud already builds well and spends the saved effort on the desktop instead: real windows, the server's own apps in the menu bar and Dock, push notifications, native file transfers, keyboard shortcuts you choose. It's also a way into a broader question: one cross-platform client, or a dedicated project per platform? What are lightning talks? Lightning talks are quick presentations from the Nextcloud community about contributing, developing Nextcloud apps, privacy and data sovereignty, and more. We have recorded the lightning talks during the event so everyone who couldn’t make it to the event can watch these inspiring sessions. ⚠️ Note: this is a live recording of a session from an in-person event. Audio and video quality may differ from our studio content. More about the event: https://nextcloud.com/conference-2026/

This is also known from Native Instruments or Toontrack, as further examples.

That could also work for Nextcloud client apps. Log in once and dedicated apps for your connected servers are installed automatically.

However, that also comes along with magnitudes higher complexity and required effort.

I love that members of the nextcloud team are encouraged to scratch their own itch with side projects like this!

I'd also love to see this (the cirruscope macos app that lets you use nextcloud in an app, not a browser tab!) integrated with the nextcloud desktop client, which has links to the web apps and supports multiple instances!

But I think, this is a way to got. Having everything in the browser is cool for some things. But it's not so practical, when this is the center of your work.
